Energy saving in papermaking by application of hybrid calcium carbonate

Hybrid calcium carbonate (HCC) is prepared by pre-flocculating oxide and ground (GCC) with ionic polymers, injecting carbon dioxide to the pre-flocculated flocs until termination of reaction at neutral pH. When used in papermaking, HCC gave higher bulk, stiffness, tensile strength than GCC did. Furthermore, when wet pressing pressure was applied paper containing HCC, solid content achieved still better smoothness, comparison GCC. Actually, very high bulk compromisingly reduced obtain applying pressure. Higher combination technology resulted drying energy savings more 10%, while a quality all essential printing properties maintained. Drying may contribute greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction lowering production cost.
